I tasted the most delicious Voodoo Hot Onion Relish at a barbecue party this week and the story behind this zesty condiment is as interesting as the sauce itself. Apparently the original inventor of the Voodoo Hot Onion Relish sold his creation over the counter of a small town general store for many years. A lady would come into his store every week or so to buy a little jar of the hot sauce and each time she did she asked the owner for his recipe.
“Oh no,” the owner would reply, “if I told you that you would never buy any more sauce from me.”
“I understand,” she would answer but she continued to ask the same question each time she purchased a bottle of hot sauce until it became a little game between the store owner and the lady. Then one day the inevitable occurred and the lady went to purchase her favorite bottle of hot sauce only to learn that the store owner had died. Saddened but keeping her wits about her she purchased the entire remaining stock of his hot sauce knowing that after it was finished she would be resigned to live forever without her favorite treat. Another inevitable day came when the Voodoo Hot Onion Relish ran out and its spicy piquant flavour was lost to the lady forever. Several weeks of bland and boring table fare passed by and then a knock came to the lady’s door. It was the mailman with a special delivery package and inside was the recipe for the hot sauce she loved so much. The old man who owned the general store had left it to her in his will. That lady was the mother of the current owner of the Voodoo Hot Onion Relish recipe and the spice is available again to those who want it through a link at the bottom of this blog site. Bon appetite to everyone who tries it and many thanks to my web site creator Ken Boyer the current owner of the Voodoo Hot Onion Relish hot sauce recipe. I am now doubly in his debt.
The barbecue was a success and a good time was had by all. The weather co-operated and was sunny and pleasant. The pool was heated to 94 degrees. The wine flowed freely and the pot smelled sweet in the air. Ahhh summer in B.C. isn’t it great!
