The following is from a work in progress.

A Wife's Handbook to Growing Marijuana

I wrote this book for my wife. We both smoke cannabis and have done so for most of our lives. I started out buying cannabis which is almost affordable if you smoke less than an ounce a month. But once you go beyond that amount it is prudent to find some other way of obtaining it other than outright purchase. Some people deal a little weed and subsidize their habit that way. Some people smuggle large amounts into the country and pull a bale out for their own use. Both of these solutions can lead to hard time and financial ruin under Canada’s and America’s seizure and forfeiture statutes. In Canada a person can legally obtain a medical marijuana license relatively easily if you follow the steps. On the surface this would appear to be an intelligent way of obtaining marijuana but the fact is there is no guarantee you will be approved and even then you still have to pay someone to provide it or to grow it for you. And now we have touched on the ultimate solution for marijuana lovers who want to get high. Grow it yourself. This can be done legally in Canada and in some States in America with a government medicinal permit to grow pot. For those who wish to do so in Canada contact the Health Canada website for medical marijuana access or write to Marihuana Medical Access Division, Drug Strategy and Controlled Substance Program, Health Canada, Address Locator: 3503B, Ottawa, Ontario K1A 1B9. In the United States there are similar programs at the State level. Federal law in the US opposes the State’s right to dispense marijuana or marijuana growing permits but more and more the individual States are winning the drug war on this front. My own feelings are mixed about the growing permit solution because I do not and never have trusted governments. Governments often change their minds about this kind of forward thinking and if that happens where does that leave us? It’s too late to grow your pot surreptitiously once you have already outed yourself to the government. And so I have provided my own marijuana for over forty years without a license. If you want to check out my marijuana experience and knowledge further you can read Smuggler’s Blues or Payback both books written by me under my pseudonym of Jay Carter Brown. I have used most of the available methods to grow my pot including, guerrilla outdoor planting and container indoor planting as well as indoor hydroponics, small outdoor baloney gardens and so forth. What I will describe herein is my preferred method of growing marijuana that I have synthesized from all of my years of being in the pot business. This growing system is so fail proof that it could be called pot growing for dummies but since this book is for my wife I won’t call it that. Instead it is called A Wife’s handbook to growing marijuana. The idea behind this handbook is that if for whatever reason I am not around my wife can continue to have her “medicine” without having to rely on anyone else. If you read through this book so can you.

Rule number one:

Don’t break any of my rules!

If you do break a rule something will go wrong-maybe not right away but eventually. Like cleaning and bleaching your plant containers between crops. You can break that rule a few times and get away with it but eventually you will get a virus or disease or pest that destroys your entire crop because you were too lazy to follow the correct protocol.

 Some Beginning Instructions
I will start with some instructions on how to start a new marijuana garden. Those of you who already have a garden can skip to chapter 999 on how to maintain it.
Is it easy to grow marijuana? Conventional wisdom says it is. Marijuana is said to be a weed and as such it is said to grow anywhere without help from man. This is true but only to a point. In the first place marijuana has been cultivated throughout history and was carried by man wherever he went. It did not just grow wild on its own although it probably could have once started. But weed was always too valuable to grow wild and free without someone harvesting it and taking advantage of its bounty. Therefore most marijuana in the world is the result of careful breeding and gardening and it grows best with care from man. Wild marijuana is skinny and weak compared to cultivated marijuana. The same is true of indoor marijuana. The light of the sun is so much stronger than indoor lighting that indoor marijuana grows much slower and the buds are only half as thick as outdoor varieties.  Even though pot can be grown indoors pot will do very poorly indoors if left untended and so every effort must be made to compensate for this disadvantage.
The key to making a successful marijuana garden starts with seeds. Seeds can be purchased in Canada at retail seed store outlets and by mail order. To find the correct seeds- type in “cannabis seeds” on the internet and stand back from all of the sites that will come pouring out at you. If you order seeds by mail do not send them to where your pot will be grown. Send them to a friend or relative or to a mail drop address. Even if marijuana (medical) is legally grown in your area it would be wise to follow some caution in revealing where your grow operation is located in case the laws change. In some parts of the country (certainly in Canada) you can find retail stores that sell seeds. If you go there park your car some distance away from the store and then walk in buy your seeds and split. Do not chat with the seed sales people about anything but the variety and nature of their seeds they are selling and you might even suggest that the seeds you are buying are for someone else. Sorry but paranoia is not a disease in the weed growing business. Paranoia is good. Paranoia is necessary. Paranoia keeps you and your garden safe. It’s not just the police that you have to worry about these days. Rotten little thieves and even worse people with guns and bad attitudes will enter your dwelling take your weed from you if they can. Remember the Second World War slogan- “loose lips sink ships” and keep quiet about your garden. It’s tempting to show off the results of your gardening efforts but resist the temptation. If only you know about your garden it will be safe from police or thieves. For those of you into James Bond there are surveillance systems and monitoring systems available that will protect your grow room. There are even systems to control nutrients and PH from a location remote from your grow room but these are very expensive and totally unnecessary for personal marijuana grow operations. If you want to go that route most hydroponics stores can obtain these systems for you.
A note here on hydroponics stores. If I was a cop and I wanted to find out who was growing pot I would either set up an under cover agent in a hydroponics store or I might even start my own hydroponics store. It would be relatively simple then to set up a surveillance team to follow a grower to his operation after he picks up a large load of supplies from a hydroponics store. I am certain this is done on occasion and I always make certain to let the sales person behind the hydroponics counter know that I have just a little two light set up for growing fresh herbs. For commercial growers it would be wise to split your purchase of supplies among several stores so as not to raise suspicions about the size of your garden. For my wife I am suggesting a simple container system of growing pot which utilizes supplies available from any garden shop. The only reason to visit a hydroponics shop is for lights and accessories such as CO2 injection. This is something I will explain later but it is not something I will recommend to personal growers due to the constant exposure to hydroponics stores for CO 2 tank refills. It is also a needless expense that only subtracts about a week from every two month flowering period that marijuana needs to bloom. It also requires closing up your room which allows heat buildup that damages your plants and requires air conditioning and vented lamp hoods to overcome. For more information on CO 2 injection skip to chapter 999.
Do not take seeds from a bag of pot you purchased to start your garden. Seeds obtained from this source are usually bad. They are often hermaphrodite seeds that grow unwanted in a garden and will give you the same “seedy bush” weed that they came from. They also may be from an outdoor variety of weed that does not grow well indoors. What you want for your marijuana garden is called Sinsemilla which means “without seeds” in Spanish. Indoor weed is specially bred and grown to provide the best results and usually come from an Indica strain of marijuana. Indica is the sister of the marijuana plant and is used to make hashish. Indica plants grow shorter, thicker and provide stronger narcotic-like highs than cannabis. In effect indoor weed is not from a weed plant it’s from a hash plant. The Latin names for these two plants are cannabis Sativa and cannabis Indica. Indica plants are crossbred with Sativa plants to provide a less sleepy high. Sativa plants take longer to grow and are skinnier and less potent than Indica but Sativa plants can provide a soaring mental high without the drag-down effects of the sleepy Indica plants. I will give you some pointers on cross breeding weed later on. It can be rewarding to breed your own special brand of marijuana based on taste, potency, quality of high, long lasting effect, burning qualities and so on.
